Stem cells: what's the buzz?

Speaker: Haifan Lin, Ph.D
Professor of Cell Biology;
Director, Yale Stem Cell Center

Date: November 19th, 2007
Time: 18:30-20:00
Place: TAC building, Rm-N107, 300 Cedar St. (corner of Cedar and Congress)

Stem cell research has been catching a lot of eyeballs and has a lot of debate as well. Dr. Haihan Lin, the director of Yale stem cell center, will give us a talk on what and how stem cell research works.

Dr. Haifan Lin, one of the country’s leading stem cell biologists, was appointed as the director of Yale stem cell center last year. Dr. Lin has extensive leadership experience in the stem cell field. He initiated and co-founded the Duke University Stem Cell Research Program, which includes 32 research and clinical labs. He is also a founding officer of the International Society for Stem Cell Research. As a very successful scientist, he identified stem cells in the Drosophila ovary and established these stem cells as an effective model for study. By using this model, he obtained direct evidence for the century-old hypothesis for “Asymmetric division” of stem cells. He was also the first to identify and name “niche signaling cells” in the fly model and has been a key player in systematically demonstrating the longstanding “stem cell niche theory” on the essential role of microenviroment signaling in stem cells’ self-renewal.
