Yale-China Forum, initiated by ACSSY, is a serial of forum, symposium, and lectures to inform, inspire and involve Yale Chinese Students and Scholars, and enhance the influence and leadership of China across Yale Community.

This time, we are honored to have Prof. Zhihong Xu, the former President of Peking University, and his colleagues with us to discuss the academic career development for Yale Chinese Student and Scholars.

Zhihong Xu received a Bachelor of Science degree from Peking University in 1965 and completed postgraduate studies at the Shanghai Plant Physiology Research Institute (sipp) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 1969. He then began his career as a research fellow at sipp, earning the position of Deputy Director in 1983 followed by Director in 1991. From 1988 to 1996, he chaired the National Laboratory of Plant Molecular Genetics (SIPP), and in 1992 he was appointed the Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. In 1999, Professor Xu was appointed President of Peking University, a post he held until 2008.

At present, Zhihong Xu is a Professor of Life Sciences both at Peking University and at SIPP. In addition to these roles, he is Chairman of the Chinese National Committee of Man and of Biosphere (unesco), and Chairman of the Chinese Society of Plant Physiology. Professor Xu additionally serves an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and of the Third World Academy of Sciences. He holds honorary degrees from De Montfort University, University of Nottingham, Hong Kong City University, Waseda University, McGill University, University of Melbourne, La Trobe University, University of Montreal, University of Edinburgh, University of East Anglia, and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth. He was also conferred the title of Honorary Professor by Hong Kong University.

Professor Xu’s research interests include plant development, plant cell culture and genetic manipulation, and plant biotechnology. He has published over 200 papers, reviews, and reports in these fields.

Li-jia Qu received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1989, a Master of Science degree in 1992, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1995 all from Peking University. >From 1995 to 1996, he conducted research as a visiting scholar at the John Innes Center, an independent, international centre of excellence in plant science and microbiology (United Kingdom). Dr. Qu served as an Associate Professor at Peking University’s College of Life Sciences from 1997 to 2001, and during that time held a one-year Senior Visiting Scholar position at Yale University in the Department of Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. Dr. Qu has been a Professor of the College of Life Sciences since 2001, and is also currently a Cheung Kong Scholar at Peking University. In addition to these roles, Dr. Qu also serves as the Associate Director of the Peking-Yale Joint Center for Plant Molecular Genetics and Agrobiotechnology as well as the National Laboratory for Protein Engineering and Plant Genetic Engineering (China).

Dr. Qu’s research interests include the molecular biology underlying rice resistance against fungal blast disease, studies of curly leaf mutants and the molecular biology of auxin in Arabidopsis, functional genomic analyses of responses to light and stresses in Arabidopsis, and the molecular mechanisms underlying dwarf phenotypes in plants.

Hongwei Guo received a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology in1992 from Nankai University and went on to earn a Master of Science degree from Peking University in 1995, and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of California, Los Angeles in 2001. From 2001-2005, he conducted research as a postdoctoral fellow at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies. In 2005, Dr. Guo was appointed to his current position as Professor of the College of Life Sciences at Peking University.

Dr. Guo has been recognized with several awards, among them, the National Outstanding Young Investigator Award (2006) and the “Changjiang Scholar” Distinguished Professorship at Peking University (2006). His most recent scientific work focuses on the genetic basis of plant hormone responses and plant senescence.
